Computer & Mathematics Occupations

Abodo found computer and mathematics occupations grew by 14.49% between 2012 and 2015 in the United States. Austin, TX places in the top 10 for computer and math jobs like software and web developers, support specialists, systems analysts, administrators, programmers, statisticians, mathematicians and computer research scientists. With major tech companies like Dell, Apple and SXSW Interactive, as well as dozens of tech startups now calling Austin home, it’s no surprise tech workers are relocating to our city for new opportunities.

Construction & Extraction

Next on our list, construction and extraction jobs grew by 9.24% in the same time period. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of Labor Statistics, five of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the U.S. are in Texas. As populations expand, Abodo notes, so does the need for new housing and city infrastructure. Austin ranks No. 7 for construction and extraction type jobs.

Arts, Design, Entertainment, Sports & Media

This industry comprises of a variety of jobs, including actors, journalists, public relations and communications practitioners, social media specialists, designers, musicians and professional athletes. These occupations grew by 8.42% from 2012-2015! While Los Angeles leads the USA in this industry, Abodo reports cities like Austin are “confirming their general reputations for artsy cool.” Austin ranks as the 6th best city for finding jobs in this line of work.
