Walter E. Long Park Makeover Plan Includes Amazing New Amenities
East Austin’s Walter E. Long Park is one step closer to a master improvement plan featuring dozens of new amenities, including a marina, event lawn, planetarium and a Ferris wheel.
The 3,700-acre park—located just 5 minutes from Whisper Valley—is the city’s largest public park. The $800 million improvement plan envisions a total makeover, including a cultural arts center and plaza, entertainment areas, a boardwalk, beach and marina, nature center and trails, adventure ropes course and Ferris wheel, observation tower, amphitheater, cabins, Expo Center, floating water sports zone and much more. Fishing piers, equestrian trails, boat launches and kayak rentals are also part of the master plan.
On June 25, the Austin Parks and Recreation unanimously endorsed the master plan. According to KUT, the parks department is looking at using bond money and enlisting private partners to fund the improvements.
The Austin City Council will next review the Walter E. Long Park improvement plan in August. If approved by the city, the first phase would cover around 300 acres at the southern end of the park and feature a park visitor center, championship rowing course, vending and entertainment facilities, an open event lawn, floating water sports zone, kayak and canoe rental facilities and more.
Whisper Valley is thrilled for the many planned amenities that will be so close to home. Our planned 600-acre signature park will also one day connect to Walter E. Long Park, allowing our homeowners to hike and bike with ease to the park.
Situated along SH 130 with convenient access to Austin Bergstrom Airport, Whisper Valley is a sustainable master-planned community offering healthy lifestyle amenities and zero energy-capable homes that are prewired for super-fast Google Fiber internet service.
